There is a big new feature set that Joe and Co have been slaving away at.. Let them know what you think.. use the fancy AJAXY comment widget right there -->
When I saw that some said "x comments" and the one I wanted to comment on said "reply", I thought: "But I want to comment! What will this do, send an email to the submitter?"
Bolder, fatter, more pronounced arrows would be nice. Also, include the (x views, y jaas) information with the score and the arrows (perhaps below in a subtle frame)? Other than that, del.icio.us import only took in a splinter of my thousands of tagged bookmarks. Don't you people want content? ;)
I got the "We're sorry, but something went wrong. We've been notified about this issue and we'll take a look at it shortly." Also, could you import more than three tags for each item? Users don't always order their tags from general to specific, it's often just an entry-related brain fart.
there are more than 3 tags per item, only top 3 are shown. del.icio.us rejected the connection this time, can you please try again. I'll fix to retry it too.
Seconded. Also, I'd prefer it if the arrows didn't get an ugly asymetrical background when I move my mouse over them. It distracts my eyes when I'm trying to read something while idly waving my mouse around.
Yeah, the arrows are a little ugly. They take up heaps of vertical space, but are still not very visible. In Firefox they are aligned to the bottom of the box when you roll over them, which just looks weird. Using images would probably be a better idea.
One more thing, related to my last comment - if you can't do it so that comments are expanded without reloading the page, I'd recommend setting the number of characters that are shown by default MUCH higher.
One more question (sorry, I'm new and didn't find it in the FAQ). Is there an easy way to track threads in which I have commented? Since you really can't have a healthy online community without trolls, and trolls need to feed on reactions. No, just kidding - I like to debate some issues.
not right now, but you can use comments slider to boost stories with more comments. we plan to have a boost for comments that are replies to you, so you will see them first or maybe even have comments as first class objects show up on your radar.
I don't think that the slider is practical for this particular purpose. Reddit has this done really good, with an inbox that contains direct responses to a user's comments - it's precisely the kind of link which is needed to follow conversations. If a user has to do visual scanning of bookmarks to find a thread he wants to check replies on, then click on it and then can still find no new comments, that's too much work. It will dampen the chatter and stifle debates, and I think that contributes significantly to growth in these kinds of sites. Reddit has no tags, the forced categories (subreddits) are broken - and it is still popular. I feel that this is thanks to strong focus on ease of commenting and tracking comments.
Yes, it can be done in different ways - I don't want to be reactionary and stifle innovation :), just saying I'd like comments with replies (or even just replies in context) to be reachable with a single click and minimum of effort.
And yet one more (I'm really sorry, you seem to need flood protection as well :)), I've saved this entry: http://zecg.jaanix.com/13282-sadness-may-encourage-more-extravagance and decided to edit tags and remove "weird", since I don't think it's weird at all. However, the tag remained.
That is a bug right now, other people can tag it differently and it affects how you view the item. We're working on it. You can see why it happened here
After spending a bit more time reading, posting, clicking and dragging, I have more thoughts. I think that sliders, while very sexy from a "communicating with technology" point of view. are a bit impractical when you try using them to fine-tune your preferences. There is (for me) a vague feeling of not being in control. There is also strong cognitive dissonance at work - I want to mark several fields as important, but moving one changes the entire configuration. Also, thing happen with links right away. I think I'd rather use the option (if it were available) to let recommender learn from my tags and allow me to assign numerical weights (through a simple metaphore, such as the pervasive arrows clicking) to each tag. Also, having a tagcloud instead of sliders would be more useful when visiting subdomains - it could be the tagcloud for the domain, or tags related to a tag in case of "jaanix.com/tag"
sliders are there to quickly adjust your preferences, otherwise the recommender learns from your clicks and your feedback, and you do not have to fiddle with them all the time. I just clear them after I'm done looking for a specific topic or recent / comment.
"sliders are there to quickly adjust your preferences, otherwise the recommender learns from your clicks and your feedback, and you do not have to fiddle with them all the time." Maybe this should be more clearly stated. I've seen a few beginners seem to ignore the existence of the recommender.
right, the outside links are still opening new window because that's how clicks are tracked right now. will switch to better method that doesn't require new window soon. People above were complaining about other links within the site, these were fixed.
Hmm, so hitting save posts to one's subdomain. But by the time I submit something I've already read it. So my subdomain is for *making* recommendations not receiving them. Am I right? Where do I go for just being able to tune recommendationis for myself?
As a reddit user, I hope jaanix comes of age. That widget is fucking awesome. However there are interface parts of the site I don't like. I don't like how everything on the page highlights to some bizarre color on hover. It is really tacky and distracting. I think the arrows are too big. Make them wider and flatter. Maybe make the up on the left and down on the right. Cheers, I really like how your site is set up. I hope it becomes popular. Oh, and popping up a new window on click is really, really annoying. That needs to go. If I want a new window to open I'll do it myself with a mouse gesture or a middle click.
cleaned up some of it, only the external site will be opened in the new window, right now this is a technical limitation of how we track clicks. will fix it soon.
I just arrived from reddit, so I can't comment on what's new. Many simple but useful features, like the sliders for tags. The only downside was that the excess of vertical space wasted for each entry, that leads to much scrolling. The minimum height (for a post with just the title, no text) is too big, even without preview images.
a) I like it a lot. b) could we allow some formatting in comments (Like BR, STRONG, EM) or BB Code even? c) I don't quite get the subdomain thing... I've hit and rated posts, commented on posts and my subdomain is blank. Normal? I dunno.
Maybe I'm blind, but is there a way to post things without using that bookmarklet? An url I can just go to to drop in the link? Sometimes I'm not using a browser that I'd like to install a bookmarklet on.
there's no url other than bookmarklet (but it doesn't have to be in the toolbar, can be anywhere), also spam protection is checking that you are using a browser too.
I checked Jaanix out a while back but the dupes were atrocious. Now that is all sorted and it is already the best social news site in the tubes of the mighty internets. I don't think I will even bother checking Reddit anymore, and I abandoned Digg over 2 years ago. The customizable filters are amazing. I can create an Obama and then drop the slider to nothing, it's pure genius. It seems like you have combined Reddit and Deli and avoided the use of those auto-downmod Greasemonkey scripts which are ruining Reddit. This is noteworthy because people on Reddit have been screaming for the tags for along time and instead they come up with that SubReddit mess which shows that they aren't listening to their users. One feature I think is sorely lacking is the Reddit toolbar that installs at the top of the page and allows you to rate articles after you have read it rather than having to find the article afterwards. Even 2 separate bookmarklets for up and down would be sufficient. For now I am willing to just click a link at a time rather than my 2 stage harvest with multiple tabs.
Thanks! "next", "jaa", "nix", and "tag" buttons are coming, "jaanix" button becomes "save" and you'll have full functionality without even touching main site, except for sliders.
Man do I agree with the comments about reddit and greasemonkey scripts! I took away knowledge about the greasemonkey plugin and left reddit - two positive things.

subdomain is for the links saved or posted by you.
Allowing images could be dangerous. How easy is it for people to report offensive images?
